Ian’s research for Brothers in Arms involved regular and lengthy interviews with his four brothers living in Perth and their confirmation of the many stories told to him as a child by his mother when he persisted in questioning her over his developing years.

Brothers in Arms is an inspiring family biography told with openness and humour of two generations of brothers and two world wars. It conveys the struggles of fascinating families in an earlier time, commencing with the benefits of the gold rush era in Victoria and Western Australia.

With the onset of the Great War one hundred years ago in 1914, two brothers take opposite paths for King and Country with life changing consequences. Hugh, the second eldest brother is shipped to the horrors of Gallipoli in 1915, followed by devastating outcomes on the Western Front, while his elder brother joins the navy and is stationed at a desk in Sydney.

The book will satisfy readers of all ages, is educational and illustrates a lifestyle that is no longer enjoyed in our heavily urbanized environment, providing a record of an Australia rapidly becoming a faint memory.
